Kunming will be our base for an excursion to Shi Lin (The Stone Forest), which recently became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shi Lin consists of Permian limestone pillars that have unique shapes due to chemical dissolution. They cover an area of over 300 square-kilometers. The unique shapes of the limestone pillars are due to a resistant cap rock. Water funneled water through fractures in the cap rock to dissolve the limestone below. You'll marvel at the weathering features and look for oolites and fossils within the limestone.
